First, train yourself to soak up inspiration no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Remember, you’re not necessarily looking for a specific solution right off the bat. You can always sift through ideas later and weed out the weak ones.

“Fill your head with as many ideas as you can that relate to what you’re designing,” said Steven Shippy, senior art director for Pioneer Balloon Company. “Look for inspiration beyond whatever type of design work you’re doing, so you don’t limit yourself.” This may include greeting cards, paper goods, photography, home decor, fashion, nature, or architecture.

Most important, however, is the desire to keep learning. “The more you know, the more you can create from that knowledge,” Steven said. “There’s no such thing as knowing too much about your craft.”
